On Monday, a tragic incident occurred in a 55-plus living community near Fort Pierce, Florida, when an 85-year-old woman named Gloria Serge was attacked and killed by an 11-foot alligator while walking her small dog by a retention pond. Witnesses immediately called 911, prompting a response from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. A nuisance alligator trapper was dispatched to St. Lucie County to deal with the alligator responsible for the attack.

According to the FWC’s website, Florida is home to around 1.3 million alligators, and in 2021, nearly 9,500 nuisance alligators, described as being at least four feet in length and posing a threat to people, pets, or property, were killed in the state. Sheriff Ken Mascara of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Facebook, offering prayers to the victim’s loved ones and the community affected by this tragic event.
